People often say it’s not their own driving that concerns them, but that of other drivers. A recent survey by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety provides troubling insight on the driving habits of Americans. The survey looked at distractions while driving, such as texting or emailing and found that those who are of college age (millennials ages 19-24) were the worst offenders.
For example:
- Overall, 88 percent of millennial drivers said they sent texts, ran red lights or broke the speeding limit in the month before taking the survey.
- Nearly 60 percent of that age group said they sent a text or an email while driving, compared to 31 percent of other drivers.
- Nearly 50 percent of millennials who took the survey said they ran a red light even though they could have stopped safely, compared with 36 percent of the rest of drivers.
With all of these distractions, it can be dangerous on the road and accident data shows it. Traffic deaths have increased in recent years – in 2016, 311 people died in Connecticut traffic accidents, a four-year high.
